Wwaa continues across the midwest
The Women’s Walk Across America (WWAA), which began in Salem, OR, as a protest to show the federal government that women will not be silenced or ignored, has made its way across the Midwest throughout July and August.
RRCO website manager, Elizabeth Kirby, and her daughter met up with the walk’s founder, Emily Waugh, in Lawrence, KS, on July 21st. Elizabeth felt it was important to include her 6-year-old daughter because the “rights we fight for now will be the ones that protect our children in the future.”
After heading into Missouri and pushing through extreme heat and humidity, WWAA walkers passed through St Louis on August 16th. One of those walkers was RRCO member and volunteer Melissa Cleary. Cleary began walking with the group in Oregon and has met up with walkers in Utah, Colorado, and now Missouri.
Sharla Friend of St Charles, MO initially volunteered to help distribute water and coordinate transportation. She was so inspired that she joined the walk and covered 13.7 miles! According to Friend, she “needed a reminder of community…a reminder of what we’re all fighting for.”
